• Vintage Shopping in Singapore

  • I love redecorating my room, but instead of heading to the nearest Typo/ Crate & Barrel/ IKEA all the time, I thought I’d head to vintage and second-hand stores to find hidden gems that I can repurpose! Plus, besides getting a new piece of furniture, you also have the satisfaction of knowing your new desk or chair has a “vintage” tag to it!

I went vintage-shopping last week, and here are some of my top picks of where to shop second-hand in Singapore!

    Second Charm

    Blk 21 Kallang Avenue
    #05-165
    Mapletree Industrial Building
    Singapore 339412

This is where I got a vintage white wooden bedside table for SGD$250. (Check out my “before and after” picture!). I figured I needed a new bedside table (mine has been with me for close to 16 years!), and it can double up as a nice mini-cabinet for all my trinklets like i.e. candles, jewellery, mirrors, purses, etc.

Besides selling iconic-Singaporean furniture and vintage pieces, this furniture store does custom made-to-order pieces too. The owner Sharifah is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and prices are rather reasonable! The shop is packed with unique and beautiful furniture, so be sure to look through every nook and cranny!

    Lorgans The Retro Store

    100E Pasir Panjang Rd
    Century Warehouse
    Singapore 118521

I got a photo frame and accessories holder for SGD $50 in total. Lorgans specialises in furniture more so than vintage trinklets, and this store probably speaks more to people who prefer their vintage furniture in more mint-condition.

    Dustbunby Vintage

    112 Bukit Purmei Road
    #01-203
    Singapore 090112

I got a 1950s USA vintage purse for $85. This store speaks more to the vintage fashionista: You can buy vintage bags, accessories, shoes, and jewellery here.

    Junkie’s Corner

    2 Turf Club Rd
    Singapore 287988

You definitely need a car to get to this ulu (Singlish for “isolated”) place. This stretch of junkyard-sized warehouses store the most vast selection of second-hand items (things are not necessarily sorted in any particular way so be prepared to scour through rows of shelves and racks and cupboards). While the place definitely has a good selection for someone looking to renovate their home/ office space, I didn’t find the place too appealing for the following reasons: 1) Prices are set arbitrarily by the “junkies”, and 2) you may encounter junkies that have little patience or keenness for customer service.

    Hock Siong & Co.

    53 Kampong Ampat
    Singapore 368326

While I didn’t make it to Hock Siong last weekend during my vintage store jaunt, this place is a definite must-go. I found out about Hock Siong through Instagram (@hocksiong), which I believe is maintained by one of the owner’s daughters! Their social media boasts an impressive 9000 following, and is a good way to see what’s new in stores. Service at Hock Siong is great and you’ll definite look for furniture you can repurpose.

And that’s my quick guide to Vintage shopping in Singapore. The list is not exhaustive, and they are more furniture-based. If you are looking for decorative trinklets, definitely head to Golden Landmark Shopping Centre or Haji Lane!

  • 3 DIY Hair Treatments with Dyson
  • beauty |    11 May, 2017  |    1 Comment    |

  • As we all know, being a mom isn’t easy, and mothers hardly have the time to indulge in hour-long hair care routines. So I’ve partnered with Dyson to share 3 quick and effective hair masks for busybees and busy mums! What’s great is that all the ingredients featured in this post can be sourced from your own kitchen!

I roped in two of my mommy-friends: Debbie and Nerissa – to try out DIY hair treatments (more about that below) that target their hair concerns.

For those with little time to spare, the Dyson Supersonic™ Hair Dryer saves time with its high velocity airflow. With its controlled yet gentle air flow, it doesn’t compromise the efficacy of your hair treatments!

In other news, Dyson is rolling out a Special Mother’s Day edition of the Supersonic™ Hair Dryer. Designed by founder, James Dyson, the dryer is encased in a charming rose leather box. Spoil your mum with this for a luxurious get-ready experience!

Tip: Wear gloves when applying the hair mask if you do not want to get your hands dirty.

Tip: Apply the treatment to area(s) you feel require nourishment. It is recommended you massage the treatment/ mask into your scalp for better results.

    My hair treatment :
    Concern: Lack of moisture
Solution: Coconut milk to add a layer of moisture.

    Ingredients:
    1 egg
    1 cup of coconut milk
    1 Squeeze of lemon
    2 Tablespoons of olive oil

Mix coconut milk after beating the egg.
Add olive oil and a squeeze of lemon and mix well.
Rinse the treatment off after 15-20 minutes.

    Debbie:
    Concern: Frizzy hair
Solution: Apple cider to eliminate and soften the kinks.

    Ingredients:
    1 juiced lemon
    1 tablespoon of honey
¼ tablespoon of apple cider vinegar

Simply combine the lemon, honey and apple cider vinegar and apply carefully to your strands.
Rinse the mask off after 10 minutes.

    Nerissa:
    Concern: Dull hair
Solution: Banana to soften and add luminosity

    Ingredients:
    1 banana
    1 tablespoon of honey
    1 tablespoon of olive oil

Slice up the banana before adding olive oil and honey.
Mash everything together till it achieves the consistency of a purée.
Let the mask sit for 15 minutes before washing it off.

Give these hair masks a go with your mum, for a fun mother-daughter bonding session while treating your tresses!

Share with us if you’ve attempted these masks, or any mask(s) that worked for you!

  • Zac Efron for Hugo Iced Interview + Giveaway
  • beauty |    9 May, 2017  |    24 Comments    |

  • To celebrate the launch of Hugo Boss’s new fragrance Hugo Iced, we were given the amazing opportunity to interview its ambassador Zac Efron via Google Hangout! This marks Efron’s fragrance campaign debut, and Efron represents the fashion house’s perception of the young, opportunistic millennial generation. The cologne, which carries with it a “Your Time is Now” slogan, is dynamic, fresh and daring – encapsulating everything a “You-Only-Live-Once”-believing millennial would champion.

Read on for our interview with Zac Efron, and read on to the end to find out how you can win yourself a set of Hugo Iced fragrance!

Andrea: How do you feel about your first campaign with Hugo Boss?

Zac: So far, the experience has been pretty amazing. We have a lot fun, travelling a lot and we’re promoting a great message along with the fragrance. So, it’s really exciting. Hugo is just kind of the best so it’s an honor for me to work with them.

Andrea: What was the main motivation behind this collaboration?

Zac: I think “Your Time Is Now” applied [to me]. I was finally ready to take the step [fronting a fashion campaign] and I also was very into the message it wanted to spread with this fragrance. I feel that being in the public eye as I am as an actor; it’s a great way to utilise social media, so I’m still learning how to get a great message out to our generation to take that first step and remember that your time is now.

Andrea: Are there any similar characteristics between you and the Hugo Man?

Zac: I hope so. I think that the Hugo Man is adventurous and fun-loving. I think he’s somebody who’s not afraid to try new things and have fun in life, and still smell good at the same time.

Andrea: You are the millennial icon and have interacted with many people from our generation. What do you feel are the qualities millennials need to have in order to succeed in life?

Zac: I don’t know if I have the answer to that because I’m a millennial. I think [it’s] just believing in yourself  I think there’s a lot of things that we can collectively do as a group, [when we] band together and unify. We also have to take charge of our lives and remember that you only have one life to live. I mean this is your time, this is it . Don’t wait and don’t procrastinate. Your time is now. Shoot for the moon. Reach for your dreams. Follow your dreams. [Most importantly], have fun.

Andrea: Who would would consider a millennial icon or trailblazer of our time?

Zac: Chance The Rapper is a really good example of somebody who’s done a lot with a little. I mean, he’s won like 7 Grammys with his new label. He’s kind of a prodigy. I like his message [in his songs].

Andrea: We just have one last request. Do you have anything to say to your Singaporean fans?

Zac: To my fans in Singapore, I can’t wait to visit and see you. Peace, love and I’ll see you soon. And your time is now.
