Beauty Guide | Halal Makeup Brands You Need To Try

Halal Makeup Brands To Add To Your Beauty Bag

Halal makeup brands have been making their way around the beauty industry for a while now. Not only has it gained the attention of Muslim ladies but it’s also caught the eyes of those looking for natural or vegan alternatives.

I’ve always been puzzled by what the term ‘Halal’ makeup means because everyone has their own definition of what it is. Personally, I define Halal makeup as cosmetics which are formulated without alcohol which could be consumed (as compared to chemical reactions which produce alcohol as a by-product), contain no animal by-products or extracts from forbidden animal sources.

This also means that the cosmetic products are alcohol-free and all-in-all, good for your skin! And if that wasn’t already enough, these brands also tend to be cruelty-free. To get you started on your venture into halal makeup brands we found 10 brands you should try!

Orkid Cosmetics

Shop

Based in Malaysia, Orkid Cosmetics creates products which are safe and ethical! Plus it’s such a steal tbh, with each liquid lipstick being sold below S$20 at the moment.

Orkid Cosmetics manufactures and sells cruelty-free matte suede liquid lipsticks which are created with high quality and vegan ingredients from Japan and Europe, then made fresh in Malaysia. The brand believes in giving you that extra boost of confidence, without having to compromise your faith, health and skin condition.

The lippies are lightweight, pigmented and non-sticky! It’s also formulated with Vitamin E to moisturise your lips. Although they currently sell a limited range of shades, we love that there are hues we know we’d use such as browns, pinks, reds and even orange.

Zahara

Shop

Zahara was founded by two local sisters, Amira and Alia Geneid, who just couldn’t find a halal makeup brand which met their needs as Muslim women. Today, they sell high-quality Halal lip, eye and nail products which are made in Europe.

The brand’s signature product is its halal and wudhu-friendly Oxygen Nail Polish which comes in vibrant shades that are water-permeable. That means that the special formula allows for oxygen and water vapour to pass through during ablution (wudhu). Zahara also sells long-wear matte liquid lipsticks, eyeshadow palettes, eyeliner and mascara too. We recommend the Golden Goddess palette, which you could use every day and on special occasions too!

Inika Organics

Shop

INIKA uses the finest Australian botanicals and pure minerals to produce makeup for your face, eyes and lips. These products care for your skin all while keeping you lookin’ good! Certified organic, vegan, cruelty-free and of course halal, INIKA has bagged over 35 international awards in the past 10 years for its product excellence and innovation.

We suggest treating yourself to a trial pack which includes their best selling Mineral Foundation Powder, as well as the Liquid Foundation and Pure Primer. If you’re feeling like giving yourself a little extra TLC, you’ll also want to get your hands on the Long Lash Vegan Mascara, which won the 2018 Glamour Beauty Awards!

Sampure Minerals

Shop

The founder of Sampure Minerals had dreams to create products that bring out your inner beauty. With that in mind, she set out to create an authentic au-natural, vegetarian and halal-certified makeup line. Its products don’t compromise in quality nor look and feel.

Sampure Minerals offers an entire range of premium mineral cosmetics for your face, eyes and lips without the use of harsh chemicals, parabens, alcohol and animal ingredients. It’s made from the finest natural ingredients which can be used by all ages and skin types! It’s delicate, lightweight doesn’t clog pores plus provides natural sun protection and anti-inflammatory properties, making it the ideal product for Asian skin.

The prices are pretty pocket-friendly so we’d recommend starting off with the Flawless On The Go set which comes with a foundation, blush, bronzer, setting powder and brush! The Nail Polish Set 2 is also a good buy for this season, with warm autumnal hues that we’re loving.

Amara Cosmetics

Shop

The first company in North America to provide and manufacture 100% Halal-certified cosmetics, Amara Cosmetics was made specifically for the Muslim community in the region. Amara hopes to promote awareness in the Muslim community that Halal isn’t limited to what is consumed as food but also applies to what is put on our skin.

All of its face, eye and lip products are made from natural sources like plant extracts and use raw ingredients. Amara’s quality products are also free of parabens, gluten, petrochemical and of course, alcohol and animal products! Other than selling makeup, Amara also sells nail polish as well as the tools you need to apply makeup — the tools are all made of quality materials of course!

Fans of the brand love the Pressed Foundation which although comes in only four shades, is pretty suitable for our Asian skin tone. It has long-lasting coverage and doesn’t cake up! Another bestseller you’ll want to try is the Organic Lipstick which is moisturising, packed with colour and is safe for your body, most importantly.

Wardah Beauty

Shop

The best-selling Indonesian brand, founded by Nurhayati Subakat, doesn’t just provide Halal makeup, but also skincare, body care and hair care! Wardah takes pride in its products which use raw halal materials of the highest quality.

We love that the products are really affordable, meaning we can splurge on a few of their bestsellers! Wardah’s Sunscreen Gel SPF is a must-have for our sunny weather as well as Wardah’s eyeshadow sets which comes in a trio of complementary shades such as the Classic Nude Colours Eye Shadow set.

Tuesday in Love

Shop

Once upon a time, the owner and CEO of Tuesday in Love was couldn’t afford even a bottle of nail polish for his wife. So one night, an idea came to mind. After nights and nights of trying to find the right formula, he made his wife a little gift. It was a small bottle of pink, water-permeable Halal nail polish — and he gifted it to her on a Tuesday morning.

Born out of love, Tuesday in Love started out with Halal certified water-permeable nail polish and has since expanded to Halal certified cosmetics including foundations, lipsticks, eyeshadows and brow products.

We’d give the Nude Eyeshadow Palette (which doesn’t look so nude) a go, especially since it has a myriad of shades that could be used in the office or for weekend affairs. We also have to mention how much we love the Hijab gift sets which come with a nail polish. Naturally, we’d choose a polish of a matching shade!

Talent Cosmetics

Shop

If you’ve always wanted to venture into K-beauty, but were a little hesitant about the ingredients, you’ll want to give Talent Cosmetics a try! Founded in South Korea, Talent Cosmetics was the first Korean brand to obtain a Halal certification for its cosmetics and skincare line, Sunwoo Cosme.

From compact BB creams to lip tints and cheek sticks, you’ll find everything you need to complete a K-beauty look. The skincare line has products for your delicate eye area, as well as products for the rest of your face. Of course, you have to try its BB Pearl Pact, a luminous BB cream which provides flawless coverage and illumination for that signature K-glow. The look isn’t complete without the Crystal Dia Lip Gloss, so be sure to get one too!

DIDA Cosmetics

Shop

Founded by women (two best friends to be exact), for women. The two fashion designers who run the brand believe in promoting confidence and self-esteem through high-quality, yet affordable cosmetics.

Dida first started out with liquid lippies but has since expanded to include differently textured lipsticks, eyeshadows, eyeliners and liquid highlighters. They’re more popular for its lip products which are said to rival foreign brands, so be sure to turn on your notifications and snatch them up while you can!

The recent Single’s Day sales have the left the brand completely out of stock because that’s just how in demand they are. We highly recommend getting the bundles which are absolutely great bargains. We also recommend trying to buy the Iconic Eyeshadow Palette, which is almost always out of stock. In the meantime, you can get your hands on some of the products on Zalora. Fastest fingers first!

Beauty Bakerie

Shop

Although Beauty Bakerie isn’t Halal-certified, I’d still recommend it as it is cruelty-free and vegan-friendly. This means that the majority of the products are free of animal by-products or extracts from forbidden animal sources. The only alcohol that would be involved is part of a chemical reaction. The website has a (short) list of products which aren’t vegan-friendly so you can check that out too before making any purchases!

Beauty Bakerie is known for its Lip Whips which are vegan and super long lasting, as well as its super cute baking-inspired packaging. The brand has also expanded into face products, eye products and lipsticks with different textures.

Try out their Lip Whips which are safe for your body and have been said to rival some of the biggest names of the industry — Kylie Cosmetics for one. The Baking Flour, or setting powder, has also become a fan favourite which we love too!

Halal makeup is always a tricky topic because of the questions that arise with it — is it really Halal, or can we even wear it during ablution? It’s a loose category which to me would still be loosely defined no matter how much time passes by. In the end, it’s all up to the individual. But one thing that’s always been clear is that Halal makeup is a good option for all because of the natural ingredients and clean methods used.

Let us know in the comments below if you know of any other Halal makeup brands, or have tried any of those listed. If you’d like us to cover more topics relating to Halal beauty or skincare, let us know too!

Lots of love,

'Alyaa Iman Imran

Hey there, I’m ‘Alyaa! Known as the loyal Swiftie by most and hopeless romantic to others — I’ve watched The Holiday way too many times to keep track. I have a deep-rooted love for baking, specifically cakes and brownies. If I’m not doing that, I’m either playing with my baby nieces and nephews, re-watching Gilmore Girls, or scouring the net for cute (and sometimes unfortunately expensive) stationery.
