This Local Fashion Model Made Her NYFW Debut With Tory Burch

Mei Yue Is The Local Model Hitting International Runways This Season

It feels like it was just yesterday when I chanced upon Mei Yue’s Instagram profile (@dmeiyue) while I was going through my explore page one sleepless night. I remember constantly watching Instagram stories of her documenting her life as a full-time student who was studying for A-levels and modelling occasionally after school.

Fast forward to present day where the 19-year-old Singapore-based model has been signed by worldwide agencies–WOMEN Management New York being the latest one–and has walked her first ever runway show for Tory Burch at this year’s New York Fashion Week. We were lucky enough to have a quick chat with her right after her runway walk to find out more about how she was feeling.

How do you feel about walking your first NYFW show?

I’m very overwhelmed and happy, I guess you could say I feel very xing fu (blessed).

When did you get the news that you’d be in the Tory Burch show?

Just 3 to 4 days ago! Actually, it’s quite early cause I feel like I just went for the hair and makeup test.

How long have you been in New York?

I’ve been here for like, 2-3 weeks!

How did you feel when you heard you were gonna be in NYFW?

I felt so so excited! New York was something my mother agency has set as a goal for me, but I had to get a Visa which required at least 50 magazine tearsheets. So I worked around Asia for about half a year and finally! I managed to get a Visa with the help of Nomad and Women! I felt so blessed and accomplished!

Are you excited about kick-starting your modelling career here?

Hell yeah, but just now I got a bit overwhelmed but I think I can deal with that and get through it with more experience.

What are you looking forward to during your time here in New York?

Campaigns!! More campaigns! *laughs*

What’s the highlight of your NYFW experience?

It would be finally meeting the casting directors and models that I follow on Instagram–I just get so starstruck! Also meeting my agency and mother agency–the team at WOMEN Management and my booker Shari from Nomad Management. Oh and not to mention my other booker, Roman Young! They are the sweetest and warmest people ever! I’ve felt so much love and been so welcomed by them.

What’s one word of advice you could give to any aspiring local models?

Do your research and have confidence in yourself. This is extremely, extremely important. There is so much to learn about the industry that it’s hard for me to give any specific advice here, but you should ask veteran models who have been working for years about their experience in the industry!

Most of them would be more than happy to give you advice. I’ve learnt so much from foreign models who have worked in the industry for 5-10 years, and especially from Vivien Ong, a Singaporean model who has been working internationally for about 8 years! Dream BIG and believe in yourself. Follow your gut feeling too because whatever happens to you, luck is also a big factor in it.

Not to sound like too much of a fangirl, but I honestly feel so proud seeing Mei Yue have so many well-deserved opportunities come her way this year. We wish her all the best in her modelling career and look forward to continuing to see her grow!

With Love,

Steph

Hey, I'm Steph! I devote my life to my guinea pigs, Soy and Bean, and I wish I could take them with me everywhere I go. My other hobbies include hand embroidery and floral arrangement. I'm also a huge sleep procrastinator and I often find myself wide awake at 4 am watching trashy reality tv shows.
