At the risk of sounding like my mother–we’re here to talk about washing your face. And no, I don’t mean a quick once-over with face wash. We’re talking about the K-Beauty approved double-cleansing method that many Korean women attribute to their flawless skin.
The thing about the double-cleansing trend is that it’s not as simple as going in twice with your usual face wash, but it’s not complicated at all either! To get the breakdown on this simple skin-saving cleansing method, keep reading!
What is double-cleansing?
While I said double-cleansing isn’t complicated, there is a science to it. Firstly, you go in with an oil-based cleansing product to break down any product or sebum that’s been building up over the day. After that, follow with a water-based cleanser to get rid of sweat, dirt, and any excess impurities from your pores.
Essentially, the double-cleansing method removes both oil and water-based build-up respectively for a more thorough cleansing that doesn’t aggravate or dry out the skin.
How do I double-cleanse?
For the oil-based cleansing step, it’s important to make sure you get any and all traces of product off your face. Depending on how much makeup or SPF you apply through the day, this could take anywhere between 2 to 4 rounds, so be patient! And just to be sure you’ve gotten all that grime off your face, run a cotton pad over your skin to check for any remnants before starting on the water cleanse.
Much like before, it’s important to be thorough with the water-based cleansing step as well. Taking at least a minute to work your cleanser into your skin–even if you’re not double-cleansing–will help you get the most out of your cleanser and its ingredients. On top of that, water-based cleansers go deeper into your pores to get rid of dirt, sweat and even pollution build-up which can cause the skin to age prematurely!
Pro Tip: Don’t forget to watch the temperature of your water! Keep it lukewarm to open up those pores, without causing irritation to your skin.
Why should I double-cleanse?
Double-cleansing might seem like a chore, but if you’re in the habit of wearing a full face of makeup (or any product really), then it’s something you should definitely make a habit of.
While it isn’t a must to do it every morning and night, it’s good to do this at least once a night if you tend to wear makeup every day. Leaving any dirt, pollutants or product on your skin can greatly affect your skin cells’ ability to regenerate at night, which causes of dullness, dry skin and fine lines–on top of breakouts!
Cleaning the skin thoroughly also means that those serums, moisturizers and leave-on products that you’ve been using will be able to penetrate your skin’s layers way more effectively, allowing you to get the most out of your skincare!
The best thing about double-cleansing is that it makes the most out of your skincare products. So don’t fret about splurging on the next best cleanser or treatment to solve your skin woes, just take a little time to give your skin the TLC it deserves!
