Back To School Beauty: Six Fall Hair Trends To Rock This Season

Fall Hair Trends 2018

If there’s anything that makeover montages of the 90s and 00s have taught me, it’s that changing up your hair can completely change your look. And since I’m headed back to school (cries) I thought it would be the perfect time to round up some of the season’s best hair trends to help us breathe some new life into our looks this semester!

Refined Bedhead

Seen at: Preen, Emporio Armani, Salvatore Ferragamo, Jill Stuart

How to get it: Natural, I-woke-up-like-this hairstyles are huge this season and are especially easy to achieve if you have naturally wavy textures in your hair. The refined bedhead is effortlessly cool, which is perfect for when you want to look great but not like you’re trying too hard. If you’re like me and have pin straight hair, you can fake the artfully dishevelled look with a generous spritz of sea salt spray.

Messy Updos

Seen at: Stella Jean, Giorgio Armani, Tom Ford, Chanel, Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini

How to get it: A hairstyle that never goes out of style, this season’s iteration reinvents it as a messy topknot. The best part about this hairstyle is that the messier the bun, the better, so you can roll out of bed, bun up your hair and be ready for the day in seconds! Pro-tip: Use a volumizing dry shampoo on your roots before tying it up will give you cleaner hair with great texture!

1990s Hair Accessories

Seen at: Bottega Veneta, Erdem, Zadig & Voltaire, Alexander Wang

How to get it: 90s kids unite! This fall, the runways abound with the return of our favourite childhood banana grips, zig zag hairbands, barrettes and sparkly bobby pins galore.

While we’re into the idea of piling on the accessories this season, we also love a simple and elegant statement piece such as an oversized golden bobby pin. It’s definitely a staple accessory to add to your rotation because it’s totally school and work appropriate while still being bold.

Big Hair

Seen at: Moschino, Sonia Rykiel, Anna Sui

How to get it: From Jackie Kennedy blowouts to hippie-chic crimps, big hair is back, and better than ever. These hairstyles are pretty high level and require a bit of love and some time to perfect, so they’re perfect for a night out—and even prom!

To get that signature Jackie O’ wave, set your hair in heated rollers or use curling tongs to create volume, making sure to curl the hair away from your face. Section off a layer of hair from the middle of your head and add a hair bump tool to get the signature 60s bump. Conceal the bump with the sectioned hair, then gently brush hair into place. Set the final look with a ton of hairspray so it stays in place throughout your wild night!

The Sleek Blowout

Seen at: Delpozo, Malone, Alberta Ferretti, Isabel Marant

How to get it: From Rihanna to Hailey Baldwin, straight and sleek hair has been getting lots of love from our favourite It Girls and their super silky locks. To achieve this simple blowout style, wash your hair with a smoothing conditioner and shampoo. Then apply a blowout balm throughout your hair before blow drying (we suggest one that’s heat protecting as well)! Pro-tip: Blast your hair with cool air at the end of your blowdry to get super shiny hair!

1980s Rebel Spirit

Seen at: Marc Jacobs, Jeremy Scott, Nicopanda, Natasha Zinko

How to get it: Go against the flow this season and stand out with these 80’s inspired haircuts! From fuzzy rockstar waves to multi-coloured locks, these styles are perfect for that cool, independent spirit look. If a perm or dye job is too much of a commitment, spice up a simple bob with L’Oreal Colorista sprays instead! They last for just 1 day and give great colour pay off even on darker hair shades. Choose a bright neon colour to nail the pop-art look, and remember to pair your ‘do with oversized sunnies to channel that art chic vibe.

School is the perfect place to experiment with your look, so grab a friend and try some fun new styles this fall! We hope this has inspired you guys to give yourself your own makeover montage this new semester!

Hey I'm Daphnie! I suffer from a chronic case of RBF, but I'm actually an easily distracted nerd who once Wiki-surfed my way from researching about the Russian royal family to woolly mammoths and ended up at obscure Aztec gods. Yeah, I'm not sure how that happened either. I regularly visit art stores to cry about expensive art supplies ($13 for a 5ml tube whyyyyy) without buying anything. I write stuff for DC Creative sometimes.
