How To Prep Your Skin Before Make-Up

When we asked professional makeup artist Airin Lee what she thought the most important step in a makeup routine was, her reply surprised us all! “Priming” is not really a step most even think about, but it actually makes a lot of sense! After all, everyone knows that the most important step in building a house is having a strong foundation. Airin explains that the first step in any makeup routine should be prepping. Prepping your skin properly with a primer can make makeup last longer, combat shine and even smoothen the complexion for a flawless finish. Read on to find out Airin’s super quick, super easy skin prep routine for perfect, long-lasting makeup.

For the first step, Airin uses micellar water on cotton pads to remove any impurities or pollution remaining on the skin. You may think that you don’t need this step since you’ve washed your face and Singapore’s water is safe to drink, but our water actually has chemicals such as chlorine added to kill harmful bacteria! Chlorine can aggravate the skin and lead to dryness, so it’s best to remove all traces of it before doing anything else. Airin recommends Bioderma’s Hydrabio H2O for its high cleansing power, high tolerance and ability to refresh dehydrated, sensitive skin.

The next step is a toner, which is meant to help rebalance the skin’s pH levels and soften skin. Our skin’s natural pH is acidic, at 5.5. However, the pH of tap water in Singapore averages around 8.0, which is alkaline. This alkalinity can destroy the skin’s acidic protective layer, causing it to become dry and sensitive and even cause eczema! Apply this step by either using cotton pads or by patting directly it onto your skin with your hands. Airin uses Bioderma’s Sensibio Toner, which she likes because it is formulated for sensitive skin and thus very safe to use!

The third and final step is the primer itself. Here, Airin’s advice is to go for something which suits your own personal skin concerns. For those seeking fresh and glowy natural look, Airin uses First Aid Beauty’s Hello FAB Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturiser. Doubling as both a primer and moisturiser, this silicone-free product has a light texture that melts into the skin for a flawless, pore-blurring effect while making your makeup last all day! It also has a light, gel-based texture and is best for soothing and calming sensitive skin.

And that’s it! Three simple, quick steps to help your skin keep its radiance and your makeup stay in place all day! This routine even lasted Andrea all through the extremely hot weather in Egypt, so you know that staying immaculate in Singapore will be a breeze.

Prep, Prime and Stay Flawless all day!

Hey I'm Daphnie! I suffer from a chronic case of RBF, but I'm actually an easily distracted nerd who once Wiki-surfed my way from researching about the Russian royal family to woolly mammoths and ended up at obscure Aztec gods. Yeah, I'm not sure how that happened either. I regularly visit art stores to cry about expensive art supplies ($13 for a 5ml tube whyyyyy) without buying anything. I write stuff for DC Creative sometimes.
